Bybit Appoints a New Chief Legal Officer to Improve Compliance.
Bybit, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has named Robert MacDonald as its new Chief Legal & Compliance Officer. MacDonald brings extensive experience from both the public and financial sectors, which will help bolster Bybit’s efforts in regulatory compliance, financial crime prevention, and governance.
MacDonald’s career began in criminal law in London, focusing on financial crime before transitioning to the UK Ministry of Justice. He later held roles in traditional finance and worked with major global companies, including a top asset manager, South Korea’s leading eCommerce firm, and Binance.
In his new role, MacDonald will oversee Bybit’s legal and compliance operations, ensuring adherence to anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) regulations, handling licenses, and addressing registration issues. He acknowledged the challenges posed by inconsistent regulatory frameworks across jurisdictions, which create uncertainty for firms and investors.
Bybit’s COO, Helen Liu, highlighted that compliance is critical for the company’s long-term success, emphasizing that a strong compliance culture is essential to building a sustainable business. MacDonald echoed these sentiments, stating that Bybit’s commitment to responsible growth and regulatory compliance will help the company succeed in a competitive market. He also noted the opportunity for reputable exchanges to lead industry-wide improvements, particularly in regulating stablecoins and strengthening AML and KYC compliance standards.
Despite the regulatory hurdles, MacDonald is optimistic about making a meaningful impact at Bybit, describing the company’s growth trajectory as “incredible” and emphasizing the importance of sustainable, regulation-compliant expansion.
